A Self-Paced Digital Course Preparing You for Adult Life

Over the 15 years that Together We Can Foundation staff have developed and refined the Smart Transitions Life-Work Portfolio Course we have encountered two challenges.

The first is that we have far more useful information than we could present around the topic of transitioning into adult life and the workforce than we have time to present.

The second is that our mode of delivery for this course is small group and classroom-oriented, so we were unable to effectively serve individual youth wishing to participate in the training.

Our answer has been to develop Smart Transitions Online: A Self-Paced, Digital Course Preparing You for Adult Life.

This program expands our life skills courses for young adults, offering flexible, on-demand access for those preparing for work, independence, and adult life.

What Is Smart Transitions Online?

Smart Transitions Online is a workforce readiness crash course for young adults (ideally between the ages of 15 and 20). It is an in-depth, self-paced program designed to better prepare youth for the adult world of work.
From its dashboard, youth work sequentially through 98 readings (brief articles touching on aspects of adult work and life) and tasks (activities and exercises to prepare youth with the tools and skills they will need to find success in the transition to adult life).
As they work through the program, youth and young adults earn badges in the categories of:
As one of our most comprehensive life skills training for young adults , Smart Transitions Online helps youth build confidence, structure, and self-sufficiency at their own pace.
Who-Is-This-For

Who Is This For?

This program is ideal for youth who are self-starters with enough self-discipline to engage in a self-paced remote program.
For youth with a bit less maturity, the program can also work with a parent or mentor who engages regularly with the youth and the program.
Part of the program, focusing on the success skill of network building, requires them to establish a volunteer mentor group of three adults who receive regular automated email updates of their mentee’s progress and successes and are available to review the resume and documents youth create.
The mentor/mentee relationship occurs entirely online and youth receive regular feedback and support from the mentor team they create. For safety and security, youth under 18 must assign one of their mentor slots to a parent or guardian, and all interactions are online and transparent in that the entire mentor team has access to any individual mentor communication.
This makes it easy for a parent to monitor and encourage their teen through the process.
This flexible design makes Smart Transitions Online one of the most effective programs for struggling teens, providing mentorship, structure, and real-world preparation for success.

What You Need to Participate

We find that this is useful for youth in high school and beyond (15 to 24), with an ideal age range being between 17 and 20.

Youth will need regular access to a computer (desktop or laptop) with internet access. Some work can be done on a tablet or smartphone, but it is much easier to complete the course document uploading requirements on a dedicated computer.

After completing the program, youth will be able to access their archived data on their smartphone or tablet to facilitate the work application process.

One of the strengths of the Smart Transition online Program is that it helps youth build career-oriented networking skills. Participating youth are asked it build an online mentor team of three adults who will help them review the work they do and support them in their progress. All interaction with mentors occurs within the application and are visible to the full mentor team. For security purposes, if a participating youth is under 18, one of his mentor team needs to be a parent or guardian.
